Last updated: 23 October 2026. This notice covers the Classroom Quiz Generator and the Smart Owl Quiz games.
Teachers: the quizzes you make (including custom questions you type), your logo, colour scheme and settings, and the results of a quiz you hosted are kept in your browser's storage on your own device. They stay there until you delete them or clear your browser's data. You can back up or delete any quiz from its page.
Pupils: the device keeps the name given, a random code that lets it rejoin the same quiz, and the quiz's colours and logo, so it can reconnect if the screen locks. Answers and names are sent only to the teacher's device and, for a shared team, to teammates' devices. The teacher can see who gave each answer.
Paper quiz: the last quiz you made on the paper quiz page, and its settings, are kept in your browser's storage. The PDFs are made on your own device; nothing is sent to us.
We'd suggest pupils use first names or nicknames only.
When you play, the questions come from our server one at a time and your answers are checked there, so scores are fair. We keep the game's settings (type of game, subject, age group, curriculum), the answers given and the score, so we can run the leaderboards and see which questions are hardest. If you save a score, the leaderboard shows the nickname you choose, your score and age group. Please don't use your real full name. Rude names aren't allowed, and we can remove any score or name.
To stop cheating, saved scores are linked to a scrambled code made from the device's internet address. The address itself isn't stored, and the code is only used to block players who cheat. Your browser keeps your nickname, your best scores and your sound setting on your own device.
To see how the sites are used, our server records each page view: the page, the website you came from, the country (from our network provider, Cloudflare), the type of device, browser and system, the browser's language and the screen width. Instead of a cookie, each visitor gets an anonymous code made from the internet address and browser together with a secret that changes every day and is then thrown away. So we can count visitors for a day, but we can't recognise anyone on a later day, and the internet address isn't stored. We also count what is made and played, such as the settings of a quiz someone makes (subjects, age group, number of rounds) or how many pupils joined a live quiz, but never the names pupils type in. These records are deleted after two years.
During a quiz, pupils' devices connect directly to the teacher's device (a technology called WebRTC). To set up that connection, each device briefly contacts a connection service (PeerJS), which sees the device's internet (IP) address and a random ID but not the quiz content. When a direct connection isn't possible, quiz messages are passed through a relay run by Cloudflare. Relayed messages are encrypted and are not stored. To use the relay, a device gets a temporary login from this website that expires after a few hours.
Like every website, our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (such as IP address, date and page requested) for security and to keep the site running.
The site is made for use in classrooms under a teacher's supervision. Pupils don't create accounts. In a class quiz their name and answers go only to the teacher's device. In Smart Owl Quiz the only thing a player types is the nickname for the leaderboard, which they don't have to give.
We don't hold names, email addresses or accounts, and quiz data is on your own device. If you'd like a leaderboard score removed, ask your teacher to get in touch. This website is run by Malcolm Christopher.
